East Weaves West: Basketry from Japan and Britain
18 January to 27 April 2008

In East Weaves West over 50 artist/basket makers – selected equally from Britain and Japan – demonstrate an exciting and wide ranging body of new work.

It’s not just baskets! The artists have created stimulating installations, wall pieces, free standing sculptures and smaller, three-dimensional forms using both natural and man-made materials. Enjoy the cultural comparisons and fascinating contrasts in the first such exhibition on this scale.

Intimate, domestic sculptures sit alongside large pieces intended for galleries and gardens. Functional items, some still in daily use, are juxtaposed with the highest of artistic expressions.

During the course of the exhibition, two leading basket makers, Laura Street and Noriko Yamaguchi, will work together to create a unique site-specific installation in the galleries.
